Not every crocodile in New Guinea is the same

Freshwater Habitat Distinguishes This Crocodile

The New Guinea freshwater crocodile, Crocodylus novaeguineae, is associated mainly with freshwater swamps, lakes, rivers and marshes on New Guinea. It should not be merged into an account of the estuarine crocodile, Crocodylus porosus, simply because both species occur on the island. Species identification, water type and regional distribution all matter when interpreting a crocodile observation or planning management.

Water Levels and Vegetation Shape Use of a Site

Vegetated wetland edges can provide cover, prey and nesting material, while seasonal water changes affect access to channels, banks and shallow areas. A site that looks dry or quiet during one visit may be connected to a larger wetland system during another season. Surveys should record water level, surrounding vegetation, signs of nesting and human activity rather than treating a riverbank as a fixed habitat.

Any crocodile deserves distance, even where a freshwater species is smaller or less conspicuous than an estuarine crocodile.
